~Prologue ~
“I said,” the yellow-blue wolf growled, “build. It. Right. Now.” He stepped out of the long shadows, his sharp claws scratching the stone ground. The wolf opposite of him snorted again, “No. This is unnecessary, Horizon.” The first wolf, Horizon, squeezed his eyes shut and exhaled through his nose. “I am trying to be patient with you!” He hissed a little loudly. “The future of this pack is depending on you.” “Describe this vision, would you? The last six times were a little unclear,” the other wolf said a bit snidely.
“Spike. How many times do I have to tell you?” Horizon snapped. He stared at Spike with enraged orange eyes. A long moment passed.
Finally, Spike sighed, “I just can’t.” After Horizon stared at him some more, he hastily added, “I’m sure my daughter would never do something like that. Did you summon anything about why she will?” Horizon’s expression was thoroughly annoyed.
“My special ability is not to be overused,” he said icily, “and the only future I need to see is my family and friends suffering because of you.” Horizon pointed his snout at Spike accusingly.
The two male wolves had never argued like this before; they had been close friends once. Until Spike wandered off during mating season, had pups with an ancient magical member of the pack, lost her, and returned with his most menacing pup.
“Well,” Spike grumbled, “surely building a portal to a forest who knows where isn’t one of the best ideas, Horizon. I want everyone to live in peace, no more fighting between you and I.”
That caught Horizon off-guard. He remembered when they were pups. Their parents got along well. So did their grandparents. And, from what he’d heard from several elders, their great-grandparents also stuck together. By fighting like this with his friend, would he be destroying a friendship that had been traced down from generation to generation?
Well, on the other paw, he couldn’t let the pack down. He was the alpha, and that meant he had to take care of everyone. And, on the third paw, what about his pup, Riversun? She’d be in danger if she didn’t have proper training on how to deal with loners, magic, natural disasters, sudden evacuations, traps, uprighters, cutdown season —
Cutdown season. Uprighters. When those creatures with weird paws that walk on two legs (that kind of look like tailless monkeys) bring their crazy contraptions into the taiga to chop down trees and demolish nature. That was the biggest threat by far to not just the wolves, but to all the animals. Who knows just how many territories of creatures big and small were destroyed each year? The forest was being impacted greatly by those uprighters. And the pack would know when it was time for the cutdown season to start; usually, scouts would patrol the pack’s turf to keep out loners, but on the first night of that dangerous period, the loners would have vanished, gone into hiding to escape. Scouts would return with reports on the area being “empty”, which was when everyone knew it was time to cover up the den and stock up food. Also, the pack had to change territories just about every four years, which was always a hard transition.
“I’m worrying reasonably,” the alpha wolf said. “There are many threats Riversun will have to face.” “Then let her get used to it!” Spike muttered. “You know, you’re not the only one who’s protective of his pups!”
“That’s it.” Horizon stormed out of the room furiously. “I’ve had enough. I’m done with you.” The white wolf gave him a surprised and wounded look, that almost made Horizon melt. “Fine,” he hissed, finally sounding angry, “I’m leaving this pack.” Horizon flinched. No wolf had ever, ever said that to him before. Who would want to leave the most wonderful, glorious, safest pack in the taiga? Weirdos, that’s who!
“You id — ” Horizon stopped abruptly. He had to stop and think about what he was saying. Okay. Take a deep breath. Now. One of his friends and, not to mention, most trustworthy wolves in the pack, was about to completely run off into who knows where. The correct thing to say here would be —
He whirled around, but it was too late.
Spike was gone.
Perhaps… forever.
So, thanks for joining me again today, guys. Hope you enjoyed it and keep a lookout for the first chapter next week!
